If you're a Missouri resident, you can apply for a special pool of student loans offered by the Missouri Higher Education Loan Authority (MOHELA). The Missouri Family Education Loan Program (MOFELP) is a private loan for students with financial need.
The Missouri Family Education Loan Program is designed to provide borrowing options for Missouri students who have financial need but may not meet traditional credit requirements for private loans. The funds are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
To be eligible for the Missouri Family Education Loan, the student borrower must:
- Be a U.S. citizens who is a permanent resident of Missouri
- Be enrolled on a full-time basis as an undergraduate or in the last semester with graduation set for the end of the term
- Be making Satisfactory Academic Progress toward first undergraduate degree
- Have expected family contribution of $20,000 or less on FAFSA
- Have certified financial need determined by the Office of Financial Aid of at least $500
- Be at least 17
- Have a GPA of at least 2.5 or composite score of at least 21 on the ACT or SAT equivalent
- Not have any fraud convictions
- Not have been delinquent on any MOFELP payment more than 60 days
- Have at least two years of credit history (or co-signer with credit history)
- Receive annual loan limits for Federal Direct Subsidized or Unsubsidized Loans, or a co-signer who meets the following requirements
- Must be a U.S. citizen who is a permanent resident of Missouri
- Must be at least 18
- Must have at least two years of credit history
